Know Your Artist
For Jeff Everett, it has always been about art. In high school
ceramics he earned the Michigan Gold Key Award in spite of or
perhaps inspired be a broken hand. In the summer of 1994, he
realized that skin art was for him, the new medium to conquer.
A full portfolio of original tattoo designs landed Jeff a coveted
twelve-month apprenticeship with veteran artist Jay Morton of
Magnum Tattooing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From
behind his machine Jeff was also, managing the shop, helping to
organize Magnum's Annual Valentine's Day Tattoo Show-at the time,
the only tattoo competition in the state-and making connections.
In 1996, world-class Austrian tattoo artist Mario Barth
invited Jeff to Miami Beach, Florida to work at his renowned
Starlight Tattoo-the only OSHA approved shop in the nation.
On the way, Jeff worked the floor at the Carolina Arts Festival Ink
in Lincoln, and the Atlanta Old-school Convention, absorbing
regional flavors and making friends.
When Starlight Tattoo relocated to New jersey, Jeff was the first to
arrive to help reconstruct the store, and tattooed through the
grand-opening party, barely looking up. Jeff helped to
organize the Starlight Classic Car Cruise and the annual Toys for
Tats benefit, which for its success, was each year forced into a
larger capacity venue.
The Underground Custom Tattooing opened in Laramie, Wyoming
in November 2000, and specialized in just that-custom art-that have
garnered Jeff awards at the 6th
Annual Cripple Creek Tattoo Competition, the
10th Annual Colorado Tattoo
Competition, the 8th Annual
Cripple Creek Tattoo Competition, and the
5th Annual Mile High Madness
Tattoo Convention in Denver Co.
Jeff, in a wake of pencil shavings, is constantly drawing. The
spring of 2002, he took a detour from skin and began a series of
color pencil on vellum which were featured for the month of August,
2002 at the Artisans gallery in downtown Laramie. Putting his
own twist on everything from traditional, old-school tattoo art to
pastel nudes and Mike Hoffman-inspired latex girls, it's easy to see
where Jeff's come from, consistently honoring the solid line work
and European color theories learned under the tutelage of his
mentors Jay and Mario.
